Video Overlay using Log Box 1.2

Postby WP22 on Mon Mar 29, 2010 10:00 pm

Thanks to improvements in version 1.2 of Log Box, I've found that the output data is now suitable for creating video overlays! RaceRender 1.4.1 can take its CSV or TXT output file directly. Check it out...

Log Box is now the easiest and lowest cost iPhone app that I know of for doing video telemetry overlays. Sorry for the bad camera angle... that was just a quick test in my street car (350z). I mounted my iPhone 3G in the center of the car, which is great for the accelerometer, but a poor GPS reception spot. Like always with the iPhone, you really need to spend some time to find a mounting spot that gives good GPS reception. The GPS accuracy reported during this test was 47-76 meters, but I've seen 9-17 in other vehicles when I took the time to find a good spot for the iPhone. The GPS accuracy issue is most apparent when doing laps around the same circuit. The iPhone can't compare to a dedicated datalogger, like the Traqmate I have in my race car, but it's pretty good for the money, and helps you make neat videos.

Very cool stuff.

It is unfortunate that the GPS isn't higher resolution in the iPhone (who knows what the 4th gen iPhone will have though). I wonder what the increased resolution is if using a 3rd party GPS adapter like the Tom Tom would be like. Probably still not nearly as good as the stand-alone units.

We also believe that the accelerometer data could be used to augment the GPS data with some higher level processing.

Pretty good, I will try it next time I got to a track.
